Impact of KVK

Diversification of Agriculture

  • Integration of Vegetable cultivation and horticultural crops through conducting demonstration and trainings was done in different agro-ecological situation for the farmers covering six blocks of the district. Now more than 100 farmers started to adopt this technology along with plantation of fruit and plantation crops (mango, citrus, Pomegranate, Apple, etc.) at their fields.
  • Integration of rural poultry, goatary, plantation of fruit and plantation crops, mushroom farming, off season vegetables, vermin-composting and rain water harvesting in homestead farms was done 4 blocks of the district.
  • Demonstration of High yielding and draught tolerant varieties of Pigeon pea, Paddy, Horse Gram and maize in during kharif season created an awareness to use such land for better income generation.
  • Change of single cropping to mixed cropping system like Arhar-Mandua, French bean-Maize, and practices of intercropping of potato-maize, etc. given an option to harvest multiple crops from a small farm unit (< 1 ha) of farmers.
  • Replacement of local variety of crops with new high yielding variety (HYV) increased the yield of following crops: Rice: VL Dhaan 154, Cauliflower: Varun, Maize: VL Sankul Makka 35, Okra: VL Bhindi2, Gehet: VLG 8, Lentil: VL Masoor 26, etc.
  • Practices of use of bio-fertilizers, vermin-compost and micronutrients under INM replaced the imbalanced use of chemical fertilizers.
  • Practices of IPM and IDM replaced the use of chemical control for pests and disease in rice, brinjal, tomato, capsicum, chilli, etc. to some extent.
  • Awareness on use of water harvesting structures (LDPE Tanks) for live saving irrigations increased the cropping intensity through double cropping in dry land areas.
  • Homestead Farming System as demonstrated by KVK, a farmer’s family can earn up to Rs. 67000/- with the expenditure of Rs. 18000. The system is unique since there is livestock-crop integration with flow of inter activity resources making homestead farmer a sustainable income for their livelihood.

  • Skill Development of Farmers

  • Crop production skills like water management (use of residual moisture, mulching, use of life saving irrigation, time and system of water application, critical stages of crop growth), cropping system (cereal-legumes system, deep rooted crop with shallow rooted crops, inter crops of legumes), nutrient management (use of bio-fertilizers, vermin-compost, foliar spray of micronutrients, organic fertilizers), water harvesting (LDPE Tanks), Integrated crop management etc. were done to more than 1000 farmers.
  • Nursery management and production of quality planting materials of Vegetables seedlings were done at KVK. More than 150 farmers were trained on nursery management and grafting techniques.
  • Skill development on training, pruning and rejuvenation of fruit orchard especially mango, Apple, Pomegranate and Citrus.
  • Skills on off-season and protective cultivation of vegetables to the vegetables grower in Six blocks of Uttarkashi district.
  • Skill development for production of vermin-compost, Mushroom and sericulture in four blocks.
  • Training to rural youth for control of pests and diseases through IPM and IDM techniques in rice, vegetables and Pulse crops.
  • Use of farm machinery and implements like power tiller, weeders, sprayers, thrasher, reaper, secateurs, maize Sheller etc.
  • Construction of water harvesting structures LDPE tanks and soil-water conservation measures like graded bund, half moon terrace, and bench terraces.
  • Health and disease management of cattle, poultry and duckary.
  • Preparation of value added products like Jam, Jelly and Pickle from different fruits and vegetables.
  • Cutting and stitching of ladies garments and preparing of quilted cushion covers.
  • Fodder (maize, sorghum) and azolla production for mulching animals for milk and fat content enhancement.

  • Entrepreneurship Development

  • Production of vermi-compost by more than 20 farmers of Uttarkashi district.
  • Establishment of Dairy unit and poultry units by more than 10 farmers in six blocks of the district.
  • Production of value added products like Jam, Jelly and Pickle from different fruits and vegetables and cutting and stitching units of ladies garments and preparing of quilted cushion covers by farm women of Chinyali, Chupalya, Vaan, Anol and Neri villages.
